Instead of feeling bad about procrastinating, give yourself a break.
- Beating yourself up won’t do anything. Instead, break the task into small pieces. By completing these tasks slowly, you will also relieve yourself of the space it occupies in your mind
Three things can change a person’s habits and long-term behavior: having an epiphany, changing your environment, or taking small baby steps for change. By taking little steps, you will be on your way to completing the task at hand, and may gain motivation to continue after having already started. Furthermore, it creates a visible path towards how you can actually achieve the goal.
These small simple steps can then become habits, resulting in every-day productivity.
Habits
Habits are comprised of four components: a cue, a craving, a response, and a reward.
When trying to break a bad habit, try to find a replacement for it to help ease the transition
(ex. when trying to quit smoking, chew nicotine gum instead).

- One can have high motivation and ability, and just need a signal to initiate the habit

So, how does one find flow?
- Eliminate Distractions

Focus allows us to train our brain power on a certain task and complete it. Through focus, we are able to accomplish amazing feats, and it is important in accomplishing things.
Luckily, concentration is like a muscle; we can exercise it and strengthen it. A definition for concentration can be “the ability to keep your awareness on one thing for an extended period of time”. Whenever your thoughts drift away, it is important to bring them back to the task at hand. It isn’t the mind that is moving, but rather your awareness. As a result, we must remain concentrated on a certain idea in our mind to be truly focused. If you’re having a conversation with someone, it’s important to put effort into paying attention to the conversation and nothing more. Eventually, such concentration will become second nature.
To aid our focus, we can declutter our environment; the physical clutter around us take away attention from the task at hand.
-It takes us 23 minutes and 15 seconds on average to regain focus after being distracted. With the amount of distractions in our daily lives, it is important to eliminate as many as possible.

Rote memorization is often found to be boring and ineffective for remembering things. This is because it only involves your analytical part of your brain.
People approach learning as a passive activity; instead of actively trying to remember things, they read information and check on whether they remember it or not. By being more active in your learning, you can receive greater results and higher satisfaction.
To learn a new piece of information, it must be associated with something you already know.
When recalling information, say out loud the things you remembered and why you remembered them. By doing this, you are helping yourself understand your own method of memorizing things.

Visual memory (painting a picture of the information you are trying to remember) is a great way to remember things. When remembering a list of items, try to infuse them all into a story with vivid details that appeal to the senses and flow in chronological order.

Importance of Reading
Reading is fundamental to learning; you cannot make learning an important part of your life if you don’t like reading:
Reading kicks your brain into gear
- Reading gives your brain a workout due to the different functions it undergoes
Reading improves memory
- Your brain functions at a higher level because of the workout you’re giving it
Reading improves focus
- You train yourself to stay focused on one thing
Reading improves vocabulary
- You come across new words to add to your own vocabulary
Reading improves imagination
- Prompts and ideas from others can help spark your own
Reading improves understanding
- You get to learn more about different lives, experiences, and forms of thinking that you may have never known about. You begin to grow your overall understanding of the world and people around you, not just yourself.
Reading efficiency is made up of two main parts: speed and comprehension.
There are three obstacles we must overcome to read more quickly:

Regression disrupts the reading process and slows us down

Outdated Skills can pose to be a challenge with the ever-increasing difficulty of material we read

Subvocalization (our inner voice when reading) forces us to read at that pace

Instead of subvocalization, we can try and visualize what we are reading

The sound isn’t what’s important; it is the meaning behind it
Misconceptions about reading:
- Reading fast results in lack of comprehension
- It could actually be the opposite; since speed reading takes tremendous focus, you will be more attentive compared to when slowly and mindlessly reading a book
- It’s harder to read fast
- Reading fast forces you to not backtrack, resulting in less energy spent rereading words
- Fast readers can’t appreciate reading

You don’t need to study every word and detail of a book to grasp its content and appreciate it

Speed readers are flexible; they speed up during boring and nonessential parts, while they slow down and reread the most exciting and important information

Second order thinking helps us understand the effects of our actions beyond the surface

Exponential Thinking
Exponential thinking isn’t thinking outside the box, but rather thinking in a completely new box. For example, instead of solving a problem, we can locate its roots. This kind of thinking is what turns into exponential and world-changing progress.

- Solving the underlying problem can help solve the surface problem
- View the problem from different perspectives
- What-if statements encourage this kind of thinking
- Research about the problem
